Pie Apple Round Up
There’s no other time of year when so many shoppers will be plotting their perfect apple pie, and folks will be on the hunt for apples to make theirs stand out. Apple pies are best when they have a mix of apples to bring a balance of tartness, texture and rich apple flavor, so encourage shoppers to stock up on a smattering of these tried and true picks.
Braeburn
Braeburn apples really hold their shape in pies, making them a great pie with varieties that bake up softer. Their flavor turns almost pear-like in the oven, giving eaters something unique.
Granny Smith
Eaters love Granny Smith for the tart flavor it brings to pies. It’s great for mixing with sweeter varieties, especially ones that stay firm when cooked, since it can turn soft in the oven.
Idared
Idaho’s red apple (get it?), Idared stays firm when cooked but has a relatively mild flavor. It’s a perfect partner for other apples that bring loads of flavor but might get mushy in the oven.
Pinova
Originally from Germany and widespread in Europe, Pinova apples have a balanced sweet-tart flavor with a hint of tropical tang. They hold their shape well when baked.
Pink Lady
This apple has a nice balance of sweet and tart flavor, and its rich apple flavor comes through when baked. The texture stays firm in the oven, so it’s great for adding to pies with Granny Smith.
It's not too late to make a perfect apple pie display with spices, pie crusts, whipped cream and other pie staples. Check out OGC’s Apple Toolkit for details on all of the apples we stock throughout the season and download the shelf signage to help shoppers make their picks.
