Okra is On! Give this Gorgeous Crop the Attention it Deserves
On a field trip to eastern Washington and Oregon this week to visit OGC’s growers in the region, farmer Alan Schreiber of Agricultural Development Group shared with us his beautiful and impressive okra crop. Standing in a field of chest-high plants, Alan offered a lesson on this under-appreciated fruit (yes, okra is a fruit that’s eaten as a vegetable).
This fiber-rich seed pod, popular across the American South, India, and parts of Africa, is thriving here under Schreiber’s care, and Alan’s team is harvesting okra daily! Okra is drought tolerant, thrives in hot weather, and is adapted to a range of soil types. Large and leafy okra plants can grow up to eight feet tall, with an impressive taproot that can break up compacted soil layers.
A member of the mallow family, its flower looks a lot like its cousin, the hollyhock. With their asparagus-like flavor and succulent texture, these tender pods are a real treat tossed on the grill with olive oil and salt, fried or in stews.
Okra is a fun treat for eaters and available in promotable volume now! Contact your Account Rep with questions and to place an order.
